Sex advice: Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a large (about the size of your hand) cup- like piece of
silicone. It should be placed in your vagina before sex so it will prevent sperm
from getting to your cervix and being able to fertilise an egg. You need to coat
the diaphragm fully with spermicide to ensure you are protected against
pregnancy.

also prevent a fertilised egg from implanting itself in the womb if necessary.
It works for between 3 and 10 years depending on the type and should be removed
or replaced after this time. It is around 98% effective.

The progestogen only pill is similar to the combined pill but only contains one

the pill by preventing the release of an egg in some women. It will also thicken
Sex advice: This implant

an egg and also thickens cervical mucus to help prevent sperm getting through.
There are two types: Depo-Provera (given every 12 weeks)
Sex advice: The Patch
The Patch is a small sticking plaster like contraceptive that you wear
discreetly on your skin. The hormones oestrogen and progestogen are then
transmitted into your blood stream from the patch. You have to change this every
7 days to ensure it is fresh and keeps working. The combination of hormones
prevents an egg being released and thickens cervical mucus to help prevent sperm
getting through. It is 99% effective if used properly.

confused by this question but the answer is really quite simple. STD stands for
sexually transmitted disease and STI stands for sexually transmitted infection.
That is the only real difference. Nowadays STI is the most widely used phrase
and was coined due to the fact that most sexually

This is not necessarily a sexually transmitted infection as it can be contracted

an STI as it can be caused by semen staying in the vagina after sex. The
symptoms are: A change in normal discharge: this can mean you have more, it
becomes thinner or has an unusual smell. If you notice any change though it is
best to go and get it checked out anyway. The cause of this is basically an

it all: sort, wash, dry, iron, fold and put away- it can seem a bit of a

Stage 1: Planning your UCAS application
Planning ahead is key when it comes to getting into university. This may be
something you have been working towards for years or an idea that has only just
come into your head. However, you need to try and figure out what you want to do
with your life as it is vital that you do what is best for you. There may be a
career you have wanted to do since you were little or something that has taken
your interest as you have grown up, now is the time you really need to . . . .
A guide to UCAS
When it comes to the start of your second year at college your teachers will
begin to urge you to start using UCAS and writing your personal statement.
‘What’s the rush?’ you ask: well, although it may seem a distant blur at the
moment, your time at university is just around the corner and you need to get
moving in the right direction. UCAS is the website that makes it all happen so
you need to gain some basic understanding of how to use the site. There is no
need to worry though, we’re here to guide you through the ins and outs of what
may seem a very scary time of your life, this article is all about how to master
UCAS and make sure you do the best you possibly can.
Stage 2: Signing Up to UCAS
You should sign up to UCAS in plenty of time to allow you to go through all the
sections and get them as you want before it is sent off. Ideally you want to do
this pretty soon after you go back to college for your second year as it can
take a little while to get to grips with the whole system and you will have a
good amount of time to decide your university choices and suchlike before the
deadline. The website can be found at: www.ucas.com.
ucas card
If you are in year 12 then you can sign up for this fantastic part of the UCAS
website which offers a great deal to students. UCAS cards are available through
the UCAS website and are a great way to get discounts on a variety of items both
in high street stores and in places such as major restaurant chains. They
provide a 10% discount which is always invaluable to students so you can get the
latest fashions, sportswear, technology and great food for a much better price,
Step 3: Course Search
The ‘Course Search’ section of the site is one that can be accessed before you
sign up if you wish but you will say how it all fits in with your application
process better if you wait until afterwards.
Stage 5: Personal Statement
Writing a good ucas personal statement is essential for getting into university,
so knowing how to write a good ucas personal statement is definitely beneficial.
Writing a good ucas personal statement is all about originality, knowing how to
write a good ucas personal statement is only part of the battle, you also have
to sell yourself. By writing a good ucas personal statement you get a good
headstart and knowing how to write a good ucas personal statement, as in how to
structure it well, only adds to this. So what are the basics of writing a good
personal statement?
Step 6: UCAS check
There are several people who can help you with the process of filling in your
UCAS application but there will be someone at your college, probably your
student support leader, who will be responsible for sending yours off. It is
useful if you find out who this person is early on so that you can book an
appointment with them. It is likely that there will be a rush of people trying
to cram in last minute appointments . . . . . .
Step 7: Course Choice
Obviously this is a pretty vital part of your application as it will decide
where you might end up going to university. It is a good idea to have attended
open days for all the places you have even considered putting down as one of
your choices, as otherwise you may end up not liking it at all. If you haven’t
done this already and won’t have a chance to before you pick where you want to
go then you will probably be .
Step 8: Check your application
You will have pretty much filled in all of the parts of your application now, so
well done. What you have to do next is simple but is a step that should not be
skipped. Even if you have checked through all your sections as you completed
them it is worth it to check again to make doubly sure that you have everything
as it should be and nothing has changed since you originally filled it in. If
anything is wrong then
Stage 9: Wait and finalise
Your application has now gone on its way and is passing through in-trays all
over the country on the desks of admissions tutors. It is an agonising time that
you spend waiting for those all important letters to drop through your post box
to let you know whether you are accepted for a course or not but try not to let
it stress you out as the process takes time. Imagine the number of different
applications that have to be sifted through and that yours may be near the
bottom of the pile even if you were fairly efficient with sending it off.
Step 10: Extra
Unfortunately it may be the case that you did not get offers for any of your
choices, or you may have even turned down all of the offers you were made, but
it does not necessarily mean you can’t go to university. Thanks to the ‘Extra’
scheme offered by UCAS you still have an opportunity to get into a university,
even if it is not the one you originally hoped. If this circumstance applies to
you then you will automatically be sent an “Extra Passport”.

last minute revision
Good student studying tips will only work if you start them early. Last minute
revision is fine if it is just to help clarify what you have already revised,
but not putting any of the student studying tips into use until the last minute
is not wise. Good last minute revision student studying tips
The importance of rewriting
Every student is guilty of this, don’t deny it. How many times have you waited
to write out your home work the night before it was due? When you were finally
done, what did you do? If you’re like most students, you shoved it into your bag
and went to sleep, totally exhausted and relieved that you won’t get shouted at.
Mind mapping
Mind mapping is one of the best student studying tips as it is easy, quite
enjoyable and it allows you to see how ideas link together. If you are a visual
learner who is tired of the same old student studying tips then this one will be
particularly good for you, however, a lot of people find it effective so however
you learn best why not give it a try?
