PUBIC LICE  Otherwise known as crabs, these are small insects that live in public or underarm hair. Symptoms include:

Itching where infected

Black powder (droppings) left in your underwear

Eggs in your pubic or underarm hair

This is one of the only STDs that can be transferred by sharing towels, bedlinen or suchlike, but even this is rare as the lice will die if not able to stay on the body. The main way of passing this on comes from direct sexual contact.

You can see the lice yourself using a microscope and buy shampoo or lotion to treat it from a chemist. However, if you are unsure then go to a GUM clinic or your doctor and they will be able to prescribe you treatment too. If you have a regular sexual partner then they will probably need to be treated too and you should avoid any kind of sex with them during treatment so you do not pass the lice back and forth. Of course, you should also avoid sex with any new partners too.

Shaving off body hair can help you to prevent getting this STD, but as it is easily treatable it is not generally worth it unless this is your preference anyway.
